| Postpartum Support International-Arizona and Arizona Postpartum Wellness Coalition PRENATAL & POSTPARTUM MOOD DISORDERS: ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT COMING FALL 2008 Phoenix, Arizona Registration Information Coming Soon Program Description: Perinatal Mood Disorders have been called “the most common complication associated with childbirth”. In fact, up to 20% of new mothers will experience a Perinatal Mood/ Anxiety Disorder. Although relatively common, few families are educated on the symptoms and treatment options for Perinatal Mood Disorders. This, combined with the strong stigma associated with maternal mental health, often prevents families from seeking and obtaining the help they need. When left untreated, the sequel often unfolds into lifelong, chronic anxiety/depression. The children of depressed mothers often fail to thrive and development along cognitive and behavioral milestones frequently lags. Prevention and early intervention can reduce suffering for the entire family. Perinatal Mood Disorders are treatable yet there are few medical/ mental health clinicians who specialize in them and there are few providers who routinely screen. This training will prepare health care professionals to properly assess and diagnose and to provide appropriate treatment for women suffering with mood/ anxiety disorders during pregnancy and postpartum. Program Goal: The goal of this two-day training event is to prepare medical and mental health clinicians to screen, assess, diagnose, and treat Perinatal Mood/ Anxiety Disorders. Participants will receive a "certificate of completion" from Postpartum Support International. Training objectives: At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to: • Assess prenatal and postpartum mood disorders. • Assess prenatal and postpartum risk factors. • Recognize and differentiate between prenatal and postpartum depression, anxiety, panic, OCD, and psychosis. • Address psychopharmacology as it relates to prenatal and postpartum mood disorders. • Recognize the impact of perinatal mood disorders on the partner and/or family and the role of the family in treatment. • Recognize effective and appropriate treatment modalities. • Understand the importance of social support in treatment. Who should attend?: Anyone working with pregnant or postpartum women. This might include: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, childbirth educators, doulas, lactation consultants, counselors, social workers, psychotherapists, midwives, home visitors, etc. Faculty: Christina Grampp Hibbert, Psy.D., is the Founder and President of the Arizona Postpartum Wellness Coalition and a past Coordinator for the Arizona Chapter of Postpartum Support International.
